Artificial intelligence is rapidly moving from the laboratory into real-world industrial settings. In this talk, Professor John A. Professor John A. List is widely recognized as one of the world's most influential behavioral economists and a pioneering force in the development of field experimental methods in economics. From 2002 to 2003, he served as Senior Economist on the U.S. President's Council of Economic Advisers, where he focused on energy and environmental policy. He has also been a long-standing Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). He has served as Chief Economist at leading ride-sharing platforms Uber and Lyft.
Over the course of his career, Professor List has produced groundbreaking research across a broad range of fields, including behavioral economics, incentive design, education policy, charitable giving, environmental and energy economics, the sharing economy, and platform markets. By leveraging real-world data and field experiments to identify causal relationships, his work has transformed our understanding of how markets function, how resources are allocated, and how public policies perform in practice. His insights have been widely applied in business strategy, philanthropy, and government decision-making.
For his contributions to the economics of charitable giving, Professor List was named one of the NonProfit Times Top 50 Innovators in both 2015 and 2016. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Frequently cited among the leading contenders for the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, he has appeared on Reuters' Nobel prediction lists and is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished and influential economists of his generation.
To date, Professor List has published more than 200 peer-reviewed journal articles and several books. His best-known works include the international bestseller The Voltage Effect and The Why Axis, co-authored with Uri Gneezy.
John A. List is one of the few practitioner-scholars working across both academia and industry, and a leading pioneer in field experimental research. He has long championed the use of randomized controlled trials in real-world market settings, applying them across business, education, philanthropy, energy, and other sectors to test and refine commercial and policy interventions, and to evaluate program effectiveness and scaling risks under real-world conditions.
In recent years, he has focused extensively on the science of scaling, building on the "voltage drop" concept introduced in his book The Voltage Effect. In 2024, he published related research in Nature, arguing that stronger evidence should be generated at the research and pilot stages so that potential scaling risks can be identified early and performance decay can be mitigated as projects expand.
At the same time, he has actively explored the intersection of generative AI and experimental research. He has contributed to the development of best-practice frameworks for AI-assisted experimental studies, advancing human-AI collaborative research by addressing key issues such as experimental design, bias mitigation, reproducibility, and research ethics.
